Taking manual work out of the legal process
A collections business working accounts through a network of law firms.
The problem
Law-firm status reports, bankruptcy notices and new bank or job details were keyed in by hand. Error tasks and stale tasks had piled up in the collection system. Suits were slow to start and slow to reach judgment.
What we did
- Automated loading of law-firm notifications and bankruptcies. Unclear rows go to a reviewer.
- Sent bank and wage leads to the firms automatically.
- Cleared stale tasks with a reviewed plan before each change, and worked down the error tasks.
- Audited every import. Changes are blocked if errors pass a set limit, and people sign off on business rules.
How we rolled it out
New imports ran side by side with the manual work and were tested against completed files first. We piloted with a few firms before switching over, so staff could check the output before they stopped doing it by hand.

50% above forecastOn recent lots
- Tens of thousands of notifications and hundreds of bankruptcies loaded with no manual entry.
- Suits started more than doubled.
- Collections on recent lots went from nearly 30% below forecast to about 50% above it in three quarters. The turnaround followed the faster suit filing and the judgment fixes.
